Frameless windows: when 100% of the visible area is glass

Frameless windows: when 100% of the visible area is glass

A truly frameless solution is not just about a slim profile. The frame is hidden within the building structure, allowing glass to cover 100% of the visible surface.

Frameless Windows: When 100% of the Visible Surface is Glass

Large-format glazing has become one of the defining elements of contemporary architecture. It opens the interior to the outdoors, brings maximum daylight into the space, and allows for the creation of visually clean facades without unnecessary divisions.

However, not every window with a slim profile is truly frameless.

In a truly frameless solution, something else is essential: the frame is not part of the visible surface. The structure is concealed within the building envelope, meaning that from the interior perspective, the entire visible area can consist solely of glass.

This is the principle upon which OBSIDIAN Glass truly frameless solutions are built.

What a Truly Frameless Window Means

With standard windows and sliding systems, part of the structural opening is occupied by the frame, sash, or visible profile. In a frameless system, the structure is integrated into the floor, ceiling, and reveals.

The result is a solution where 100% of the visible surface can be glass.

This does not mean, of course, that the glass itself transmits 100% of the light. It means that the visible frame does not detract from the glazed area and does not restrict the clear opening.

It is precisely thanks to this that maximum natural light can enter the interior, leaving the view entirely unobstructed.

Not a Thinner Frame. A Concealed Frame.

In architecture, the term minimalist frame is frequently used. However, the difference between a minimalist and a truly frameless solution is fundamental.

  • A minimalist frame remains visible.

With truly frameless glazing, the frame is concealed within the building structure.

This transforms not only the appearance of the window itself, but also the way a person perceives the entire space. The boundary between interior and exterior is optically suppressed, and the view itself becomes the dominant element.

Large-Format Glazing Without Unnecessary Divisions

The advantage of a frameless system is most pronounced with large glass surfaces.

The larger the glazing, the more each visible profile affects the overall appearance of the facade. For a truly large-format solution, it is therefore not only the size of the glass that matters, but also how discreet its structure can be.

  • At OBSIDIAN, we work with insulating glass units measuring up to 6,000 × 3,210 mm.

  • A single pane of glass can thus create nearly 20 m² of continuous glazed area.

Such dimensions make it possible to create panoramic glazing with minimal division, significantly expanding the possibilities of contemporary residential and commercial architecture.

Why Aluminum

Large-format windows can be designed using various material solutions. Wood has its own aesthetic and technical qualities and is a suitable choice for many buildings.

However, as the glass size increases, so do the demands on structural stability, statics, and the dimensions of individual profiles.

  • This is precisely where aluminum holds a fundamental advantage.

Thanks to its strength, it allows working with large formats while maintaining a very slim structure. Profiles can be minimized to the utmost or completely concealed within the building.

Aluminum thus makes it possible to combine two requirements that are essential for large-format frameless windows: maximum glazed area and minimal visible structure.

Simple Appearance, Complex Technical Solution

A frameless window appears very simple. Yet this simplicity is the result of precise engineering.

With large-format glazing, a wide range of parameters must be addressed—glass weight, statics, anchoring, thermal performance, drainage, seamless transitions to floors, ceiling, and facade, and of course, the installation itself.

  • The less structure is visible in the end, the more precise its preparation must be.

At OBSIDIAN, we therefore do not view the window as an isolated product. We design large-format glazing as an integral part of the entire building's architecture.

More Glass. More Light. More Space.

The purpose of a truly frameless window is not to create the thinnest profile possible. The goal is for the profile to virtually disappear from the user's view.

When the structure is properly integrated into the building, 100% of the visible surface can be glass. Maximum daylight enters the interior, and the view is not unnecessarily disrupted by a frame.

The result is cleaner architecture, an enhanced sense of space, and a more natural connection between the interior and its surroundings.
